When I was a kid I disassembled home equipment for fun, until my family bought a PC. Then I began looking over my Dad's shoulder to learn programming. Since then the world of computing and programming evolved but for me one thing remained the same, the notion of a machine doing exactly what you tell it to do was and is extremely freeing. Who knew you could make a profession out of that? Today I find satisfaction in delivering what people want to use - beautiful UIs and underlying systems that makes their day better.
